Chapter 11

Ginny stood a few yards outside the campsite, just beyond the firelight. Tom covered the distance between them with surprising speed.

“Who needs booze in the rain when you can have a warm woman to keep you company?” he growled.

More alarms went off in her head. She needed to run. Push him out of the way and bolt. But her body refused to move.

He sidled closer to her, a sly smile on his lips and a funny tilt to his eyebrow. She imagined he was trying to be seductive, but his face did nothing but make her shudder.

“We can prop that little lean-to up on the hill over there.” His eyebrow perked in invitation.

She did her best not to lose her dinner.

When she didn’t answer him, he stepped up toe to toe with her, his chest bumping hers.

“Let’s go get lost, Gin.”

She leaned away from his musky breath. That’s when his hand snaked out to snag her arm. His fingers were like a vise on her bicep, and she fell into him with a wince. His other hand dropped to rake up a fistful of her skirt. In a flash, it dragged up the outside of her thigh, and his fingers tugged at her short bloomers beneath.

A flash of horrid memories struck her. Tom’s rough hands and body. Pinching, twisting, ripping. In her shock, her brain almost didn’t register fast enough to scream. She managed a soft yelp as she pushed against his chest. His hand on her arm was strong though, and she couldn’t twist it free.

Then just as quickly as the unwanted hands had appeared, they vanished.

Tom fell back, dragged nearly off his feet. Noah released the front of the dirty outlaw’s shirt and swung a fist at the man. It connected with Tom’s jaw with a crack, and Ginny jumped.

Tom flailed backward from the blow, eyes wide in surprise. When he regained his footing, he turned a wicked glare on Noah. Then he roared and came after him.

Ginny gasped, fingers at her mouth, as she watched the men pummel one another. Noah landed another two hits to the face and one to the abdomen. Tom got him in the cheek and shoulder. Both men bellowed as they attacked, nearly drowning out the shouts and swarming of the other cowboys.

“Cool it!” Otis shouted as he and Jeremiah pounced on Tom.

Ernest stepped in to press against Noah’s chest, shoving him back a few feet to put distance between the fighters. He whispered words Ginny could not hear, but she was at least glad the fighting had stopped.

Both men stared daggers at one another, and she waited to see if either would leap for the other again.

The Van den Berg men managed to corral Tom away though, and Ginny let out a ragged breath.

Next to her Ernest squeezed Noah's bicep. "Breathe, brother."

Noah blinked, and the rage finally cleared from his eyes. “That son of a bitch can’t go around putting his hands on people―”

“I know.” Ernest let go and gave the arm a pat.
